MATADOR

A bold and beautifully simple mid century colour lithograph of a matador kneeling in the ring, sweeping a vivid crimson cape over a charging bull. The bull is just a dark silhouette against charcoal, so the flash of red becomes the heart of the picture, with the small, still figure of the matador in pale olive holding his ground beneath it. Full of tension, with a sense of theatre and movement.

Colour lithograph in original glazed, gold frame.

Signed Lars Normal and numbered 253/300.

Frame dimensions: 34 x 23cm

About the artist: Lars Norrman (1915 to 1979) was a Swedish painter and printmaker from Helsingborg. He left school at fifteen and began painting while serving in the merchant navy, before studying under Otte Sköld in Stockholm and with Fernand Léger in Paris in the mid 1930s. Bullfighters became one of his best-loved subjects, alongside landscapes, maritime scenes and figures. After the war he became best known for his colour lithographs, some of which IKEA reproduced as posters in the 1970s.
