A striking vintage portrait of a bearded man, his eyes lowered and his face built from loose, overlapping planes. The artist works with real freedom, laying the paint on thickly in places and dragging it thin in others, so the face seems to come in and out of focus. A deep navy jacket anchors the bottom of the canvas, and behind him a pale, airy background in chalk white and washed blue hints at light from a window or the sea.
