A charming vintage Swedish naïve oil painting titled Äppeltjuvarna ("The Apple Thieves"), depicting a gang of striped-shirted bandits making their getaway in a blue motor car, apples tumbling from a laden tree and dynamite stashed in the back. The Swedish flag flies proudly from the bonnet beneath a bright summer sky.
Painted with thick, textured brushwork in the folk art tradition, the scene has all the wit and storytelling charm that defines Scandinavian naïve painting.
Signed by Rune Gustafsson (1933-2012) and dated 1961.
